The leather sector is Bangladesh’s second-largest source of foreign exchange, yet ongoing concerns over environmental impacts and the recent promulgation of higher standards for sustainability compliance threaten to limit access to global markets and constrain exports of finished leather products. The Leathertrace Bangladesh project, funded by the Sustainable Environmental Pollution (SMEP) Programme, is addressing this issue by developing and piloting a digitised traceability and environmental‐footprint system that will help tanneries in Bangladesh to transition towards more sustainable methods of production by demonstrating compliance with global climate change and sustainability regulations such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). By aligning with internationally accredited standards - such as those set by the Sustainable Leather Foundation (SLF) - the Leathertrace project aims to help reduce environmental pollution, enhance social accountability, and create a replicable model for sustainable leather production in Bangladesh with the possibility of its findings being applied in other leather producing regions such as East Africa.
